Photoprotective Isoprenoids as physiological markers for drought and heat stress in Douglas-fir

DFG-funded project:  Adaptation of forest trees to climate change – Diversity of drought responses in Douglas fir provenances

The aim of the project is to determine the significance of volatile isoprenoids for drought and heat tolerance in Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) provenances which differ in their geographical origin, and, therefore, probably also in their drought responses. These predicted differences shall be used for the establishment of tools for marker assisted tree improvement to select high-yielding Douglas-fir provenances for a prognosticated warmer and drier future climate. Experiments will be carried out in the field with 50 year old trees as well as under adjustable conditions in the greenhouse with two to four year old trees. The experiments will include photosynthesis measurement, GC-MS analysis of emitted and stored volatile isoprenoids, enzymatic activity tests by colorimetric measurements and transcript abundance by qRT-PCR of selected monoterpene synthases.
